First Unitarian Church's 5th Annual Fairly Free Thinker Award
The fairly free thinker award extends gratitude and appreciation by a progressive congregation in Salt Lake City to an individual whose actions in the wider community best capture the essence of justice. As a free thinker the individual marches against the tide of a conservative environment. Fairly free merely underscores the obvious: The honoree has pursued progressive ideals as an independent thinker. First Church gladly honors those in the community who have extended themselves to improve the lives of others. The recipient of this year's Fairly Free Thinker Award will be actor, playwright and activist Charles Lynn Frost.
At the conclusion of this year's annual auction on-line fundraiser: http://slcuu.auctionanything.com/logon.taf? this presitgious award will be given in a special program at 6:30 PM on Saturday November 19, 2011 in the Chapel of First Unitarian Church, 569 South 1300 East. Opportunity drawing winners will then be announced followed by a party in Eliot Hall where libations and appetizers will be served free of charge.
The Thrill of the Auction - the Hottest New thing at First Church

Going, going, gone!
In fall 2011 we are challenging ourselves to do something different for our yearly auction. This year you won’t hear the sound of the auctioneer’s voice, you won’t have to pay $45 to attend the event, and you won’t hear the bang of the gavel announcing “Sold!”
We are launching our first foray into an online auction and e-commerce. We are committed to new technologies and new services to advance our church mission and connect not only to our loyal UU members here in Salt Lake but to a larger, potential global marketplace. Our auction theme is “Right Path, Right Time.”
We have high hopes for not only advancing sales for this auction but more importantly reducing the tremendous wear and tear on auction volunteers. We also anticipated that minus the $45 ticket price, more members from our community will participate.
But if you’re one of the many who looks forward to the annual live gala, don’t dismay. We plan on a “free” celebration the last night when we reveal the results of the auction. We will quaff wine and beer and offer incredible hors d’oeuvres. We will still have the thrill of the auction with great gifts, amazing getaways and destination homes, and remarkable finds; but at the ease of the Internet. Just imagine, you can bid for something in your PJ’s in the convenience of your own home?
How is this strategic for you?
1. The auction will have a two-week window. Bids can be placed at any time (24/7) and this gives you time to search, decide, and bid.
2. There are no geographical constraints. Bidders can participate from anywhere that has Internet access so if you are not in Salt Lake, no problem!
3. You can still get that bidding fever as you wait in anticipation to see if you will “win.”
Here’s how you can help. We need some great offerings from you. Can you offer trips, a cabin, a house, jewelry, or other wonderful things collecting dust in your home? It needs to have a value over $100. For gift baskets, we will require pick-up at First Church to save on mailing costs.
