Greeting and Ushering are vital to creating a "Welcoming Congregation" - where everyone feels welcome at First Church. This is a key goal of First Church, one that differentiates us from most of the Salt Lake valley.
A Greeter/Usher's goal is to provide visitors with a sense of order, direction, and hospitality upon entering the doors of First Church.
Greeting/Ushering Duties Include ...
- Welcome members and visitors as they enter the church. Give them stick-on name tags if possible. If it creates a bottleneck don’t do it.
- Offer everyone a Sunday order of service.
- Suggest they leave all food and drinks at the door. If they are extremely determined to take something into the sanctuary, let them.
- Make sure there are Orders of Service in Eliot Hall.
- If people come with children, tell them about “Sunday School” and offer to take them to their classroom. If they want to keep their children with them, suggest they sit somewhere they can leave easily if they need to—in the back on the aisle or in the balcony.
- If necessary one row of chairs can be added to the mail aisle on the south side. Set up chairs in the vestibule as needed. Chairs are in the small space(s) under the stairs to the balcony.
- Six people can sit on each row. As the chapel is filling check to see if anyone can move in to allow someone else on the row.
- When all space is taken, let late comers know about the large screen TV in Eliot Hall and space there.
- Once the service has started close the doors (left first) and let people in when there is a break, i.e., end of reading, song, etc. Following the opening music, Tom will pause to let late comers find places.
- There should be a total of 4 people passing the collections plates. Start at the front of the church taking opposite ends of a row. One will start at row 1, the other at row 2. Each will skip a row working to the back of the church. Two people will go to the balcony and two to Eliot Hall. Take the plates to Hal in the office.
